The War Between the States
On April 12 the first shots of the civil war were fired at the north at Fort Sumter Charleston, north Carolina and then war was declared against the north and the south, Union and Confederate, or Good Vs. Evil. The war lasted from 1861 to 1865. During the war the north was fighting for the freedom of the slaves in the south. the south thought it was there right to harbor slaves in plantains and farms to work for them. After fighting for 4 years the south had surrendered admitting there defeat, and 620,000 of 2.5 million were killed (Burns). There was a total of 10,500 battles between each side in hopes of winning over each other for the fight of slavery ("American Civil War History"). The population of the south was most affected to were they were devastated with 260,000 deaths for a small area of 12 states.
How the Theme and the Event Relate
Because of the several million people the stood up for what was right , today we no longer have slavery. When all the all 2.5 million people joined the army they didn't expect to be apart of one of the most important wars in U.S History, but they did expect to fight in a war for a reason. that reason was for standing up in what they believed in. The north was fighting to the freedom of the slaves and would stop at nothing to achieve that goal including sending troops to the south, sign bills, and pass laws in hope of freeing the slaves. The theme of how good prevails over evil in this event in shown when the Union finally defeated the Confederates in a 4 year long battle, the evil being the South and the North being the good.
